We sat down with Peyton Reed, the director of Ant-Man and The Wasp to ask…What the hell man!? Despite the threat of possibly taking a dart to the neck (something we heard from multiple actors during our interviews) we wanted to know about the future of Ant-Man and The Wasp in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since that mid-credits scene still has everyone picking their mouths up off the floor.

This post contains spoilers from the movie!

Thanks to Disney and Marvel Studios for bringing me to LA for the Ant-Man and The Wasp event.

Talk about the imagery in the Quantum Realm.

Peyton Reed – I think there was a concerted effort in the first Ant-Man and in Dr. Strange to kind of start embracing that psychedelic aspect of the Marvel Comics, which is always part of the Marvel Comics since the ’60s but had not really been explored in the MCU.  And there are different dimensions and, hopefully, they’re all gonna sort of serve different purposes in the future.  With regards to our movie, it was something where we were trying to figure out what we were gonna show and how we were gonna deal with the plots around it.  We had to key off what we saw in the first movie, but we wanted to show the audience a little more.

It was really fun to sort of design what that could look like, dramatically, how it would work but then it also had to fit into the rest of our movie which is, compared to some of the other Marvel movies, you know, a little more grounded.  It takes place in our world, not in Outer Space or Asgard or something like that.  So it had to sort of have a reality to it too so it was a huge challenge to sort of start to visualize the concept around it but really, really fun.

Ant-Man and The Wasp Director Confirms the Future of Cassie Lang as Stature and Young Avengers

There is a scene in the bedroom with Cassie and Scott chatting about being Ant-Man’s partner. Is there a possibility of Cassie becoming a Young Avenger.  Is this a look into the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

PR – I think that everybody is aware from the first Ant-Man and now in the Ant-Man and The Wasp, who Cassie Lang is in the comics and that she does become a hero.  And so I think we wanted to definitely start laying some groundwork for that possibility.  I don’t know what specific plans are but I really liked the idea.

Cassie Lang as Stature and Scott Lang as Ant-Man

I think Abby, it’s fun to work with Abby three years later now.  And I always love in movies when you see particularly a little kid and you see it here, Abby was 6 in the first movie and 10 now, you see how she has sort of grown.  And I like the idea that you have these glimpses where she goes toe to toe with Agent Wu. And then she covers for her Dad and she’s got that side of Scott, that’s a little mischievous and everything but she’s a tough kid.  And I really love the idea of doing that intimate scene where she’s talking about maybe needing a partner and in her mind, it’s her and him having to say that ‘of course you could do it but I’d be a terrible father if I allowed you to do it.’  I think that’s one of the things that I liked the most in the movie is that Scott, the evolution of the Scott/Cassie relationship.  It helps that Abbey is so good.  She’s such a really focused young Actor, and it’s sort of rare.

And Paul is a huge part of, they just have a really nice chemistry together and he’s able to relax her and sort of like, it’s a nice dynamic. Fathers and Daughters is a real thematic, it certainly wasn’t the first one and we wanted to progress that in this movie, whether it’s literal Fathers and Daughters, like Hank, and Hope and Scott and Cassie are more figurative like you know, Bill Foster and Ava, as Ghost. I like the idea of furthering that theme.

I want to point out the 3 on Cassie’s jacket in this shot. 3rd Ant-Man in the making!

Did Peyton Reed know that he was going to open that fresh Infinity War wound with that mid-credits scene?

PR – Actually, we weren’t sure at the beginning.  We knew that our movie was gonna take place, as not only a sequel to Ant-Man but also to Civil War because we couldn’t ignore what Scott Lange did in that movie.  But we weren’t always sure how we were gonna fit into the larger timeline with regards to Infinity War.  Somewhere during the process, this idea occurred to us of like ‘Oh, well something like that.’ And it seemed to work for us tonally, and sort of allows us to do our very stand-alone movie but then, have it fit into the larger Marvel happenings.

What’s next for Ant-Man and The Wasp?

PR – I think one of the fun things about the Marvel Universe is I think Kevin has a larger plan but that plan is extremely fluid.  And people always ask, ‘what did you have to do in this movie to pay off the other thing’ and his general philosophy, at least with the Ant-Man movies, has been to make them as stand-alone as possible and anything you guys decide to do, whoever the Directors are in the next movie, they’re gonna have to deal with the ramifications, which is kind of nice.  But there’s a fluidity and I think it’s the idea of whatever makes for the best character arcs and the most interesting and maybe surprising thing, wins.

We will see more of Ant-Man and The Wasp in Avengers 4. Here’s hoping Goliath or Ghost weren’t dusted and can help Scott out of the Quantum Realm to help whats left of the Avengers defeat Thanos and free everyone from the Soul Stone. (Yeah, I said it!)
